At a glance
- Epitalon is a four-amino-acid synthetic peptide; a significant part of its research has come from the circle of the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. [1] [5]
- The “lengthens telomeres” claim comes from cell culture experiments; in a 2025 study, telomere elongation was also seen in cancer cells. [1] [2]
- In mice, mean lifespan did not change; the study reporting mortality in humans was conducted not with epitalon but with an animal pineal extract. [3] [4]
- A 2025 review writes that critical information on the safety of epitalon is missing. [5]
- It has no licensed product in Türkiye. [7]

What is epitalon?

Epitalon (also written Epithalon, Epithalone) is a tetrapeptide made up of alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and glycine (AEDG). It was synthesized based on the amino acid composition of the polypeptide extract Epithalamin, obtained from bovine pineal gland, and was later reported to be also present in the pineal polypeptide complex solution. [5]
The first research on Epithalamin was conducted by V. K. Khavinson and V. N. Anisimov. [5] Most of the cell, animal, and human studies on epitalon have also come from the same research circle; the author lists of the studies below show this. [1] [3] [4]
What the concept of a “research peptide” means is covered in a separate guide: What is a research peptide?
Are epitalon and Epithalamin the same thing?
No. Epithalamin is a polypeptide extract obtained from bovine pineal gland; its content is not a single molecule. Epitalon, on the other hand, is a single tetrapeptide synthesized in the laboratory based on the amino acid composition of this extract. [5] According to the review by Araj and colleagues, Epithalamin has been widely studied, including in clinical studies, and these studies have been the basis of the description “geroprotective agent.” [5]
This distinction matters: a human result reported for Epithalamin cannot be transferred directly to epitalon; the extract also contains other components. For this reason, which product was examined is stated separately in the human studies table below. The same review also reports that the presence of epitalon itself in the pineal polypeptide complex solution was recently confirmed. [5]
Does epitalon lengthen telomeres?
Telomeres are DNA sequences at the ends of chromosomes and are regarded as one of the biomarkers of aging; the enzyme telomerase can lengthen telomeres. [2] The source of epitalon’s anti-aging reputation is cell culture findings related to this enzyme.
- Khavinson et al. (2003): Adding epitalon to a telomerase-negative human fetal fibroblast culture initiated expression of the catalytic subunit of telomerase, enzyme activity, and telomere elongation. The authors interpreted this as pointing to the possibility of extending the lifespan of the cell population and of the “whole organism.” [1] This interpretation is an inference from a cell culture experiment to an organism; the study did not measure lifespan in an organism.
- Al-Dulaimi et al. (2025): Researchers from Brunel University (London), who reported no conflict of interest, examined epitalon in two breast cancer cell lines and in normal epithelial and fibroblast cells. In normal cells, telomere length increased in a dose-dependent manner through an increase in hTERT and telomerase. In cancer cells, telomeres also lengthened significantly; here the mechanism was alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT). [2] The figures of the article were changed with a correction published in November 2025. [2]
Telomere elongation in cancer cells cannot be read as a “rejuvenation” finding; because carcinogenic potential has not yet been studied, it is an open safety question (below). The clinical studies section of the 2025 review by Araj and colleagues contains no human study measuring telomere length; the same review writes that the mechanism of action of epitalon remains uncertain. [5]
What did animal studies show?
In the 2003 study by Anisimov and colleagues, female mice (epitalon and saline groups of 54 mice each) received subcutaneous injections at regular intervals from 3 months of age until natural death. Epitalon did not change food consumption, body weight, or mean lifespan. The lifespan of the longest-lived 10% group was extended by 13.3% and maximum lifespan by 12.3%; chromosomal abnormalities in bone marrow cells decreased by 17.1%. Total spontaneous tumor incidence did not change, and leukemia development was seen 6 times less. [3]
The authors write that these results suggest a “geroprotective” effect of epitalon and the safety of long-term use in mice. [3] A single study in mice is not a sufficient basis for long-term safety in humans; this general limit is also discussed on the BPC-157 and TB-500 pages.
Has epitalon been studied in humans?
The human data reported come from centers in Russia and Ukraine; the studies are small and their designs are reported in a limited way.
| Study | Product and population | Reported result and limit |
|---|---|---|
| Khavinson and Morozov (2003) | Epithalamin (pineal extract) and the thymus extract Thymalin; 266 older adults, 6–8 years of observation, products given in the first 2–3 years | Mortality in the Epithalamin group was reported as 1.6–1.8 times lower than control. Randomization and blinding are not described in the abstract; the product is not epitalon; the authors are from the institute that developed the product. [4] |
| Retinitis pigmentosa study (as reported by the review) | Epitalon; 162 patients aged 18–72, St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology | Improvement in visual acuity and visual field and no reported side effects are described; the control group received the standard treatment of the time. [5] |
| Circadian rhythm study (as reported by the review) | Epitalon; 75 women, placebo and control groups | The urinary melatonin metabolite (6-sulfatoxymelatonin) was found 1.6 times higher than with placebo; expression of some clock genes changed. No clinical outcome was measured. [5] |
Khavinson and Morozov interpret their results as “evidence of high geroprotective efficacy.” [4] However, the study examines not epitalon but an animal extract, and random assignment is not described in its abstract; under these conditions, the mortality difference between groups may reflect initial differences between the groups rather than the effect of the product.
Is epitalon safe?
Unknown. The 2025 review by authors from two Polish universities who reported no conflict of interest states that critical information on the safety of epitalon is missing in the studies examined. According to the authors, before epitalon can be approved as a new active substance, short- and long-term toxicity studies are needed first; these must also cover genotoxic effect, carcinogenic potential, and food-drug and drug-drug interactions. [5]
The same review reminds that short peptides such as epitalon are generally unstable in the body and are rapidly broken down, and that epitalon can exist as eight stereoisomers because of three asymmetric centers. [5] The word “epitalon” on a product label does not by itself show the purity or form of the substance inside.
The FDA writes that epitalon may carry a risk of immune response (immunogenicity) by some routes of administration, that there is no safety information for the proposed route of administration, and that it therefore does not have enough information to know whether it could harm humans. [6]
Legal status: FDA, WADA, and Türkiye
US (FDA)
The FDA places in “category 2” the substances nominated as bulk ingredients for compounded (pharmacy-prepared) drugs that may present significant safety risks. In the archived copy of the page dated September 27, 2024, epitalon appears in the 503A category 2 table with an addition date of 29 September 2023. [10] On the FDA’s page dated April 22, 2026, it is in the table of “substances nominated and withdrawn” because the nominators withdrew the request, and the FDA’s assessment above remains on the same page. [6] This list is not a drug approval.
For the 23–24 July 2026 advisory committee (PCAC) meeting, the FDA evaluated epitalon on its own initiative for use in insomnia and concluded that the evaluation criteria were against adding epitalon to the list of substances that can be used in compounding drugs in pharmacies. [9] On 24 July 2026, the committee, contrary to the recommendation of FDA experts, gave advice in favor of adding; according to a law firm summarizing the meeting, the vote ended 7 yes, 4 no, 1 abstention, and for addition to the list the FDA must carry out a rulemaking process with public comment. [11] The advice is not binding and does not mean a drug approval.
Sport (WADA)
Epitalon is not named on WADA’s Prohibited List, valid from 1 January 2026. The S0 class of the list, however, prohibits at all times pharmacological substances that are not addressed in other sections of the list and that have no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use. [12] Whether epitalon would be evaluated within this scope is a decision of WADA and national anti-doping organizations; not being named does not mean it is permitted for athletes.
Türkiye
There is no product with epitalon as the active substance on TİTCK’s Licensed Human Medicinal Products List dated October 16, 2026. [7] Article 19 of Law No. 1262 on Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Preparations (1262 sayılı İspençiyari ve Tıbbi Müstahzarlar Kanunu) punishes those who manufacture unlicensed preparations and those who knowingly sell, offer for sale, or have sold preparations made this way with imprisonment of one to five years. The same article provides the same penalty for those who sell, market, or advertise a product with a claim that it diagnoses or treats diseases even though it is not a preparation; importing preparations made abroad without a licence for commercial purposes is considered smuggling. [8]
